ENGLISH UNDERGRAD TRENT OLSEN RECEIVES UHC FUNDING
The Utah Humanities Council (UHC) recently awarded two fellowships—one to an undergraduate student and one to a graduate student—to support research in the humanities. Each student fellowship provides a cash award of $500. Unlike their peers in the sciences, students in the humanities have typically been disadvantaged by a lack of financial support to do research. Trenton Olsen, an undergraduate student in English at Utah State University, received a UHC fellowship for his project that compares the poetry of contemporary Irish poet Seamus Heaney to the famous Romantic writer William Wordsworth. “While scholars have long been interested in Wordsworth's influence on Heaney,“ Olsen wrote in his proposal to UHC's board, “my analysis provides new important insight on the relationship through a close reading of Wordsworth's ‘Tinturn Abbey' and Heaney's ‘Changes'.” Olsen will present his research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research and the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association Convention More
