American Studies New Majors Survey
Name_______________________________________ Date__________________________

Please respond to the following questions. By providing this information, we can advise you more effectively.

1. American Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of American culture. Which disciplines at USU do you see yourself exploring? For example, I have an interest in women's suffrage-to more fully understand that area I would see myself taking courses in American politics, American history, literature, and possibly art. (Though my listing does not include disciplines outside the College of HASS, yours may.)

2. Are you an English Teaching major? YES NO

3. Are you a double major? If so, what is the other major?

4. Are you a transfer student? If so, indicate which institutions you have attended. Have you received an associate's degree?

5. What is your class rank and GPA? (E.g. sophomore, 2.5)

6. When do you plan to graduate?

7. Describe your strengths and weaknesses as a writer.

8. Have you had English 2010, Research Writing, or an equivalent course?

9. What is your minor, if known? (A minor is required for an American Studies degree).

10. What language(s) do you read?

11. Are you intending to study a foreign language? If so, what language? (16 hours of a language are required for the English BA)

12. Do you plan to continue in school? If yes, where and in what area of study? If no, what are your career plans?

American Studies Course Planning

American Studies majors and minors have the unique opportunity to design their own program of study based on inPidual interests. Since there is no one set of courses that all AS majors and minors must take, it is vital that you plan your course of study so that it is coherent.

1. Identify the clusters you plan to pursue. Majors must have courses in at least 2 but not more than three clusters. This will help you identify which foundations courses are most appropriate for you.

2. Within your clusters, which areas do you plan to emphasize. For example if you are in the American Institutions and Ideas cluster will you likely be taking Political Science, History, Communication, and/or Anthropology?

3. American Studies students are strongly encouraged to have a three-credit internship. This can be counted as one of your cluster courses. Please describe your ideal internship.

4. The American Studies Seminar (Engl 4620) and American Studies Capstone (Engl 4690) are required for majors. They are offered spring semester only. Considering when you plan to graduate, when will you be taking the seminar and capstone?
