Isotope

Isotope: A Journal of Literary Nature and Science Writing is published by the Utah State University Department of English with support from the College of Science, the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, the Utah Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. The journal explores the worlds of nature and science–from wilderness to astronomy, from urban ecosystems to the body–through memorable work produced by writers, artists and scientists.

Isotope began publication in the spring of 2003, shortly after Christopher Cokinos took over the editorship of Petroglyph, a journal that was the result of the collective work of students, volunteers and faculty who guided each issue to publication. While honoring and embracing the work that best defined Petroglyph, the new magazine sought an expansive vision that moved beyond traditional nature writing. That vision has succeeded: Isotope has received national recognition in such venues as Poets & Writers, Utne.com, Best American Science and Nature Writing and Martha Stewart Living Radio’s "The Naturalist’s Datebook."

Subscribers to Isotope include writers, artists, critics, scientists and general readers with an interest in the creative exploration of our world. Please visit our website to read samples, get submission guidelines and to subscribe online.
