WHAT'S NEW
THOMAS NAMED INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN
 Utah State University professor of English Jeannie Banks Thomas has recently been named Interim Associate Dean of the Arts. Her major assignment as Associate Dean will be to provide leadership to the collective arts-related activities and curricula in HASS by working with the various units of the college, as well as engaging in collaborations with other Utah State University units, and with local, regional, and national venues. In addition, she will serve on the Dean's Executive Team, as well as work with the Development Officers of the College and university. Jeannie will retain a 25% appointment in her home English Department. Her new office will be in the HASS Dean's suite.

MELENDEZ JOINS LATINA ACADEMICS AND ACTIVISTS
 USU poet and department of English lecturer Maria Melendez will give a reading of her work on Friday, August 1, as part of the National Conference for Latina Academics and Activists to be held in Salt Lake City. Her poetry reading, "The Seven Gates to Aztlan (for mixedbloods)," will be part of a panel discussion “Reading with Chicana Authors and Poets," slated to begin at 10:30 am. The conference will take place on the University of Utah campus, with most events taking place in the Heritage Center building. As part of the conference, Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS), a national organization of Chicanas/ Latinas and Native American women working in academia and in community settings, will hold its annual Summer Institute. NEH OFFERS TEACHING DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIPS
The National Endowment for the Humanities is currently offering Teaching Development Fellowships to support college and university teachers pursuing research aimed specifically at deepening their core knowledge in the humanities to improve their undergraduate teaching. This highly selective new program anticipates awarding approximately twenty-four fellowships in its inaugural (2008) competition. The application deadline is October 1, 2008.
